Alfred BOISSEAU (Paris, 1823 - Buffalo, 1901): Portrait of a notable, 1841. Oil on canvas signed and dated lower right. 81 x 65 cm. (faded) Presented in an important late 19th century wood and gilded stucco frame Born in 1823 in Paris, Alfred Boisseau was a student of Paul Delaroche. In 1845, he left France to emigrate to the United States, first to New Orleans and then to New York. There he painted Native American themes (he exhibited a work on this theme at the Paris Salon of 1848) but also numerous portraits of local personalities. He also worked as a daguerreotypist, art teacher and art dealer. In 1860, he left for Montreal where he opened three photographic studios while continuing the art of portrait painting. He died in 1901 in Buffalo. The portrait we are presenting is dated 1841. It was painted during his Parisian period and represents a notable, named knight of the Legion of Honor in a refined atmosphere; the artist having chosen to concentrate all his art in the realistic retranscription, both physical, psychological and social of the character.
