Pupil of Charles-François Daubigny, one of the masters of the Barbizon school. Emile Mathon was a great traveler who brought back particularly colorful panoramic scenes of rigorous design from his travels, notably Algiers and Tunis.
He was named an officer of the Académie in 1892.
He is represented in the Grandville, Le Havre and Dieppe museums.
